It's boring to some. It's exciting for others.
I like fishing. Not in some dinghy old fish farm, but out in the open sea. But I obviously had bad experiences with rough seas and deep sea fishing. I practically fed the fishes.
Fishing is not about patience. Fishing is about skill. It's like golf. How you tee off. How you slice the ball. How you putt it in. It all depends on the terrain and weather.
Fishing depends on the type of fish, the area and the weather does not play a part. Yea... it does not. Fish is not afraid of the cold.
A fishing rod.
Rods come in various sizes and flexibility. 8-10 feet rods for beach fishing. Short 5 feet rods for deep sea or heavy duty fishing. Flexibility depends on where you're fishing and for what fish. Trout fishing in the rivers use a special rod that is so flexible that you can whip someone with it and they would not know what hit them. Deep sea fishing rods are rather stiff and can take weights up till 100 pounds or more.
The fishing line.
The line also plays an important part. Imagine hooking the fish and just as you're about to reel it in, the line snaps! *sulks*
A good brand helps. If you don't know what to get, then just get the most expensive. Hah! It also depends on what type of fish you're trying to get.
The hooks.
Too many types. Big ones for big fish. Small ones for small fish. Make sense?
-----------
There are many other little paraphalia used to attract the fish, other than just the hook and bait. People use little lures, burley, light sticks and many other little things that they attach to the rod or throw in the water. Burley is actually dough with fish oil. Apparently, the fish oil will attract fishes to the area and hope that they will bite the hook.
Some might say that it's a silly idea to have a single hook for one fish. Well, there are ways of attaching many many hooks to one line. Using the net is not as easy as you imagine. Those you see on TV where a boat moves along with a net and lots of fishes stuck to it is called trawling. It's illegal if you are not licensed. If you throw the net in and haul it up in a single spot is ok, but not when the boat is moving.
Fishing is exciting when you have fishes biting the hook and getting them in. The challenge is keeping the fish on your hook and pulling it in. When the fish fights, we fight back and that's another challenge that makes fishing so addictive and unforgettable.
Try it with someone who has experience in fishing. Don't go to a fish pond. Go out to the deep sea and see the various types of fish you can get. It's amazing how God's imagination created the fishes of the sea.
Let's be fisher'men'.

Er..I'll think twice about the deep [blue] sea. But the next trip we make to the kelong off Pulau Sibu, we'll call you ok? Lots of sotong to bring up. Fancy sleeping, with the sound of waves lapping underneath, in one common dorm with >50 others! Someone sang the Unchained Melody at the Curry OK and woke me up. Everyone was having a go at fishing except for my daughter - soaking up a seabreeze tan. My son nearly fed his finger [aurrgh] to the fishes with his Swiss Army knife doing all night fishing. My husband can now understand why I insisted on a kelong that sits behing the Pulau hiding from the open sea..
