For the best actress (Sharifah Amani) to be shot down during an award ceremony (19th Malaysian Film Festival) for speaking in english instead of malay makes my heart heavy. She even had to do a public apology for speaking in a different language? someone also commented that if we had such people commenting today, what about P Ramlee? I think he even used hokkien...

Also, if i remember correctly, some ministers have also used english when interviewed.

Being chinese and able to speak decent malay with the right slang doesn't make me able to speak formally in public. I've tried using malay on stage, and it doesn't sound like the type of malay that belongs on stage - typical pasar-type.

being malay not not speaking malay... we get a lot of that in sg. i know of malays who speak worse malay than me. so, what about it? they still work and contribute to society as any other person.

Many people have probably written journals and books and thesis on how a developed country 'developed' and how a developing country takes so long to be 'developed'.

The basic rule we used to learn is that developing/third world countries had more agriculture produce and less manufacturing/R&D. That's what geography lesson taught us. That's the economics of it all.
